How to find the right hammer

Thunderline

Choosing a hydraulic hammer is not a catalogue guess. For professional buyers, fitment comes first: excavator tonnage, coupler interface, and mounting reality. Get those right and the commercial conversation is straightforward. Get them wrong and you lose days on returns, adapters, or an attachment that underperforms on the job.

This guide walks through a practical sequence we use at Thunderline when matching hammers for EU contractors and fleets. It ends with a hand-off to our fitment check request — quote only, with fitment confirmed before any order.

Start with excavator tonnage

Carrier weight class is the primary filter. A hammer sized for a mid-class excavator will not behave the same on a compact machine, and oversizing for a light carrier creates stress on the boom, hydraulics, and coupler. Under-sizing wastes cycle time and wear.

As a working rule of thumb for mid-range hydraulic hammers:

  • Under ~3.5 t — usually outside standard mid-range hammer bands; request a fitment check.
  • ~3.5–5 t — lighter mid-compact band; confirm hydraulic flow and coupler.
  • ~5–8 t — primary focus class for many EU utility and site jobs.
  • ~7–11 t — heavier mid-class; verify oil flow, pressure, and return line capacity.
  • Over ~11 t — typically needs a dedicated heavy configuration; contact us rather than forcing a mid-range SKU.

Always use the excavator’s operating weight (and any counterweight configuration you actually run), not a marketing “class” label alone.

Confirm the coupler (S40 / S50 / S60 / S70 / OilQuick / Lehnhoff)

Most professional fleets run a quick coupler. The coupler family determines which hammer variant you can mount without adapters or custom brackets. Common interfaces we quote against include:

  • S40, S50, S60, S70 — Symmetrical / S-type coupler sizes widely used across the Nordics and much of the EU.
  • OilQuick — full-hydraulic quick coupler systems; specify the exact OQ size on the carrier.
  • Lehnhoff — Lehnhoff-compatible mounts; confirm the plate / claw generation on your machine.

If your fleet standardises on one coupler family, say so in the quote request — it speeds matching and reduces wrong-variant risk.

Pin-on mounts need a fitment check

Pin-on (direct pin) mounting is not a drop-down “buy now” option in our finder. Pin centres, pin diameters, ear width, and boom geometry vary by excavator make and year. For pin-on we treat the enquiry as a request fitment check: send carrier model, serial or year if known, and pin measurements. We confirm mounting before any commercial commitment. Our coupler and pin-on measuring guide shows exactly what to measure.

The same applies if you are unsure which coupler is on the machine — “Not sure” is a valid answer. Better a short clarification than a wrong plate.

Quote-only: confirm before you order

Hydraulic hammers are commercial equipment. Our process is quote-oriented: you select tonnage and coupler directionally, we confirm fitment, hydraulics, lead time, and terms, then you proceed. That protects both sides from catalogue mismatches and surprise freight.

Have ready when you enquire: excavator model and operating weight, coupler type (or pin dimensions), typical work (concrete, rock, trenching), and delivery country.

Next step — request a fitment check

Use the stepwise finder to narrow tonnage and coupler, then request a quote on the matched product. Outside the preview bands, or for pin-on / unclear mounts, email us and we will run a fitment check.
